French Twist Variations

I use two seamless "Euro"-combs by Alexandre de Paris to secure this style (learn more about the use of decorative combs here).
Use the larger comb like a french twist comb (catch only very little roll hair or it'll be hard to push in). Repeat with the smaller comb below. This works best on loose, fluffy twists.
This is one of my favourite versions for securing a roll that I started twisting at the crown, because inserting the second comb reduces the poofiness that can occur at the nape if you start a high twist.
Using a french twist comb works even quicker and holds the roll as securely as the two Euro combs. Inserting it works similar.
Make sure to get a seamless quality comb or file down any seams or sharp edges.
French twist combs can be dressed up nicely by hot glueing fancy buttons, beads or rhinestones on the spine. I have seen the most adorable combs being self-decorated by fellow LHC members. Get creative!

Twists that are held by subtle regular or french twist combs can easily be dressed up with fancy hair sticks, (fake) greenery or flowers.
A quick and secure way to fix a twist is a (fake) Ficcare Innovation (the concorde or bird's beak style) or curvy Millennium clip.
If you use one of those clips only open it about one cm (1/2"), catch some scalp hair with the lower half of the clip and slide it into the updo. The reason why I can open it all the way and close it over the roll is because my hair is so thin/fine that my twist is fairly flat. Anyone with thick or normal hair will be better off using this kind of clip properly ;)
When you choose a concorde/millennium clip make sure you get a good quality one. The edges should be smooth and not too thin or sharp, and the spring should be strong. If the edges are fine a strong spring won't hurt your hair even if it hurts your finger when you pinch it with the clip.

I found that a twist holds especially well when it's secured both at the top and within the seam, so I got myself two matching wooden hair forks of different length.
I insert the longer fork on top, pointing the prongs towards the ceiling, catch some scalp hair, reverse direction and slide down in a weaving motion, catching both scalp and roll hair along the way. Then I insert the short fork diagonally like I would a regular comb and slide it underneath the first fork.
This holds so tightly I have to be careful or it can give me a headache!
In theory this should work with two hair sticks instead of forks as well, but I haven't managed this version to hold longer than half an hour yet.
A french twist comb by FranceLuxe - subtle, elegant and incredibly well made. It's a bit harder to insert than my cheap combs because of the blunt tipped prongs, but once I got the hang of it it held perfectly.
I also ordered tiny matching barrettes and other hair accessories from FranceLuxe - see the whole lot, and a closeup of the "Mojave" colour, quite an interesting swirly mix of brown, black, bronze, gold and pewter.

Another street fair, more hair toys ... I bought those in Berlin. I needed a few additional hair pins within the seam to hold this twist, but it's amazingly comfortable. The fork is very lightweight - I wouldn't want to use that variation on a very windy day though, a comb holds the style more securely for me.
The hair sticks have cute carved owls on top.
Yet another french twist comb - got that one from Bijou Brigitte, a chain of stores similar to Claire's. I spent a while sanding down the seams and sharp edges. It's still pretty wobbly though and not even remotely comparable with FranceLuxe smoothness and quality, but I think it looks cute :)
I managed to get quite a bit of height at the crown with this twist - it's essential to get just the right tension to create some height without allowing the hair on top to form funny loops (see my french twist troubleshooting page for help).

A twist held with a plain tortoise comb by FranceLuxe, decorated with two dragonfly mini claws I bought at a local Douglas perfumery. Those dragonflies also look cute on a bun.
More two fork twists with hair forks by Blondiesturn. The twist on the right picture is decorated with a pair of Mei Fa hair sticks with silver beads.

A hair jewel to end it all! A hand made Swarovski French Twist comb by FranceLuxe - perfect for dressy occasions and goes well with everyday clothes, too.
